Stalkerware apps free

Stalkerware for mobile is easy to get by these days and you don't have to look further than Android's official store. While Google is quick to boot such apps when reported, some linger on adding thousands of installations. Yesterday, researchers from Avast reported to Google four stalkerware apps believed to be the work of a Russian developer.

They were promptly booted from the official Android store, but new ones have been discovered. The functionality of these apps allowed someone to spy on people without leaving a trail on the device. This types of apps is often used to secretly monitor employee or life partners. Nikolaos Chrysaidos from Avast found today three new stalkerware apps that have been installed tens of thousands of times; and they are yet to be removed. A third one named Employee Work Spy is less popular, with more than 10, installations.

Avast says that all the apps have been installed overtimes. These are not top-of-the-line apps and need to be added manually to the target device. They ask for an email address where it delivers a password to access the spying software.

To make the spying app invisible to the victim, a second program needs to be installed, which instructs towards uninstalling the initial app. Typically, their spying capabilities are limited to tracking the target's location, grabbing the contacts list, SMS and call history. On rooted devices they can also collect WhatsApp and Viber messages, Avast says in a blog post today. To hide the true purpose of their apps, developers of stalkerware promote their products as parental control apps.

However, reading the description of a different picture is painted, attracting users that want to spy on partners suspected of cheating, says Chrysaidos.

They aim to collect phone calls history, private messages, location data, browsing patterns, and many other private aspects of their life that are stored on their devices. This is an absolute disgusting and messed up practice that's affecting more and more people around the world.

Most of the victims don't realize they are being targeted since these are silent applications working in the background, collecting data and sending it to a remote server where all the information is gathered and organized for the attacker's easy access.

Google Finally Gets Around To Banning Ads For Stalkerware

Most of these applications are advertised as tools to monitor children and keep them safe. Although, as I've said beforeI don't think surveillance is the answer to keeping children safe.

But I'm not a parent and I don't want to get into that. Back to these hideous applications, all of them support Android and iOS devices but I'm going to focus on the iOS versions. This is the most limited option for the attacker.

On a stock version of iOS, due to its sandbox protections, applications cannot read data stored by other applications. This means a spy app cannot read private messages from Whatsapp or iMessage. But there are still a few spying capabilities that are available like Geo-location and contacts tracking. This can be seen on an app called mSpy Lite.

Location tracking The geo-location tracking works by turning the app into a "location listener", similar to how an application tracks your location when you go biking or running.

Except this application will be running all the time and the victim won't be able to stop it even if they force-close the application. The disassembled version of mSpy Lite shows how the application registers itself to listen for "location changes".

These methods would provide the mSpy Lite application with enough information to track the victim's whereabouts on a daily basis.

Contacts tracking iOS provides a way to access a device's contact list. This is used on legitimate applications, like VoIP calling or messaging applications, to show a list of contacts the user can interact with. However, this functionality is used by mSpy Lite to read the contacts list and upload them to their servers. Based on the documentation, both of these features can only work if the user accepts a pop up requesting for these permissions Contacts and Location.

In this case these are accepted by the attacker, thus the victim doesn't even know their device granted access to this data to the mSpy Lite application. And the mSpy Lite application adds the required description for requesting these permissions:. With every new version of iOS Apple is restricting more and more access to user data. The good news is that companies are abandoning this model, the bad news is that they are now using a different model to target iOS users, iCloud. More on this later.

Here's my interaction with mSpy's customer support that said they don't support mSpy Lite and they have another "solution" for iOS users. They even offered me a promotion for their new service.

Jailbreaking a device gives users the ability to install software not signed by Apple. This gives some advance users the possibility to install tweaks and modify the look and feel of the operating system. It also helps security researchers, like myself, perform security assessments on iOS applications and iOS itself. But to the benefit of these attackers, it also gives them the opportunity to install spying software that's way more powerful than sandboxed applications like mSpy Lite.

On jailbroken devices, applications can read data outside of their sandbox. This means that, for example, a rouge application can read a local database stored by a messaging application. Most of the available spy applications for jailbroken devices provide the same functionality. I picked one called iKeyMonitor. I picked this once since it provides the same functionality as most of the other options and it's free to install.

All other options require a payment to be processed before they provide a download link. And I absolutely refuse to give my money to any of these horrid companies. We use cookies and similar technologies to recognize your repeat visits and preferences, to measure the effectiveness of campaigns, and improve our websites.

While spyware and infostealers seek to steal personal data, stalkerware is different: it steals the physical freedom of the victim. But this is not about data theft — this is about control of the person. If it is installed by parents with the knowledge of offspring, there is little harm. All too often, however, it is used to secretly spy on where the target is, and what that person is doing; and often it is merely a sinister process that is part of, or degenerates into, an abusive relationship.

That abusive element of stalkerware is so severe that in Novembersupport groups for victims of domestic abuse formed the Coalition Against Stalkerware. The problem and danger of stalkerware comes from its position sitting astride the distinction between genuine concern and outright malicious intent. The majority of traditional malware is installed by remote hackers using software vulnerabilities or social engineering.

This can be detected and prevented by anti-malware products. Anti-malware products do not prevent legitimate installations, and stalkerware itself is not illegal. The use and intent may be, but the device knows nothing about intent.

In that context, the installer could be a parent, a couple in a genuinely close relationship, an employer monitoring staff use of a company device, an aggrieved ex-partner, or a controlling existing partner. Some of this is valid, but much of it is sinister and dangerous.

Do these three things to keep stalkerware at bay

Because it is not illegal, stalkerware can often be found on legitimate mobile app stores. It is usually described in innocent terms. Other stalkerware is less ambiguous, openly identifying itself as a way to keep track of a partner or spouse, or a means to closely monitor employees. Most legitimate organizations frown on the use of stalkerware.

Using its mobile threat detection platform apklab. Google is firm about malicious apps on its storefront and has a stringent validation process in place, but the presence of applications like these shows that stalkerware can be difficult to identify before damage is done. In this case, that damage was a combined install-base of overdevices across the eight removed applications.

Over 37, users encountered stalkerware in the first eight months ofwhile only 26, encountered trojan-based spyware. This makes stalkerware more prominent today than one of the most significant forms of malware.

Although Russia, India and Brazil were the global leaders in reported usage of stalkerware apps, the US and UK have worryingly high rates as well.

The United States had the fourth highest proportion of potentially affected users worldwide at 7. Meanwhile, the UK was the third most stalkerware-affected nation in Europe. The problem is that stalkerware is only harmless when it does no harm. Documented occurrences of stalkerware leading to direct physical harm in an abusive relationship are rare. They do occur but are rarely reported.

It is believed that victims fear that reporting physical or sexual abuse will provide no solution but make the problem worse.

This fear has statistical support from the U. How is this relevant to stalkerware? To date, there have been few legal actions against stalkerware or its developers. Noticeably the product was legally described as spyware although used as stalkerware. Only recently have authorities begun calling the threat by name.

Clearly, legislation is not currently able to provide serious protection against stalkerware. Firstly, it is difficult to declare a technology that can help parents protect young children to be unlawful. Developers can sell the product as child security even though they know it will be used for adult stalking. We use cookies and similar technologies to recognize your repeat visits and preferences, to measure the effectiveness of campaigns, and improve our websites.

Compared to January and February this year, before lockdown measures took effect, March through June saw a surge in the use of stalkerware, an insidious kind of software that allows users to track both the physical and digital moves of others, sometimes accessing photos, videos, and emails, sometimes even tapping into their WhatsApp and Facebook accounts. During this public health crisis, there have been several reports documenting the increased detection of stalkerware, which could be indicative of increased access to personal devices during lockdown or stay-at-home orders. It could also be reflective of an abuser increasing or changing their tactic if the victim is now actually out of the house more often, if they are an essential worker in healthcare, for example.

Its purpose is to keep tabs on everything you do, then report it back to whoever decided to spy on the most intimate and personal details of your life. As smartphones further entrench themselves in our daily lives, the amount of information we both knowingly and unknowingly entrust to these devices likewise grows. This has, in many respects, been a boon — albeit not exclusively to the people we have in mind. And the threat is real.

Anti-virus company Kaspersky Lab reports that, init found stalkerware on 58, mobile devices. As you might expect, journalists and activists are often the target of such attacks. However, that doesn't mean your average person has nothing to worry about. Far from it, in fact. Galperin made clear that the use of stalkerware goes hand in hand with modern day domestic abuse.

While this is a particularly modern concern, it is not necessarily a new one. For a brief stroll down a terrifying stalkerware memory lane, one can look to the great reporting done by Motherboard on the topic. Be warned, it's not a pretty sight.

Clearly, this is a serious problem with real world consequences. Thankfully, there's something you can do to protect yourself. Stalkerware is designed to run undetected by the victim. Finding such a program on your phone, then, is the first step toward addressing the personal violation and safety risk it poses. But how to do that? Patrick Wardlesecurity researcher at Jamf and founder of Objective-Seeexplained that the easiest way to prevent stalkerware from being installed on your phone is to keep it locked and out of others' hands.

That you don't share! While this is great advice in general, life isn't always that straightforward. After all, if you're in an abusive relationship with someone controlling enough to install such monitoring software on your phone, that person may also demand access to your device. That doesn't mean you're helpless, though. If you have a phone running Android, you can scan it for stalkerware with an anti-virus tool from Kaspersky Lab.

If there's a hit, the anti-virus program will alert you.
